Fishing

We have our own fishing for salmon, sea-trout and brown trout on ten miles of the River Torridge available exclusively for our guests. There is a large rod room, drying facilities and a small shop stocking all the basic requirements needed to fish the river.

We also issue licences so you do not even have to worry about obtaining one beforehand. For those of you who wish to ‘cast a line’ for the first time, expert advice is available. Tackle is also available for hire.

The game fishing on the River Torridge is extremely varied, with salmon, sea-trout and brown trout all providing excellent sport at different times throughout the season. The fishing season on the River Torridge starts on March 1st and finishes on September 30th.

Large sea-trout up to 10lb enter the river in late April and May, but once they have been in the river for a few weeks and settled in the pools, become extremely difficult to catch. The main run of sea-trout up to 4lbs starts in June. Late June, July and early August is the best time. In normal low-flow conditions the best chance of taking a sea-trout is in the hour preceeding and the hour following dusk.

With an abundant variety of fly-life and beautiful, sometimes breathtaking scenery, BROWN TROUT fishing can be equally as absorbing as that of salmon and sea-trout. In the spring as the water warms, brown trout begin to rise freely to a dry fly. Best months are April, May and June. Caution is the keyword when fishing for brown trout, they are very wary and easily scared. It is essential to move up or downstream quietly especially when wading.

Prices will remain the same as 2009.

The fishing season on the river Torridge begins on March 1st and ends on September 30th, but there should be an extension until October 14th. At this time only barbless hooks are allowed with compulsory catch and release Fishing is available to anyone who wants to "have a go", however guests of the Half Moon do get priority. Booking is not necessary in advance, as beats are allocated after breakfast each morning.

Non residents wanting day tickets should telephone the evening before to check availability, and be at the Half Moon by 9.15 on the morning of fishing.

The brown trout season starts on March 15th.

These prices are for a full days fishing.

We issue licences on the premises, and also have tackle available to hire or buy.

Tuition can be arranged, but needs to to booked in advance. The charge for this is from £30.00.

Dogs are allowed on the river, but must not be allowed to cause distress to any animals that may be on the farmland.
